What Is a Video Synthesizer?

A video synthesizer is an electronic instrument that generates and/or processes video images in real time. A modular video synthesizer is a collection of small devices called modules mounted into an enclosure.

Modules perform different functions, such as shape generation or color mixing. Artists can choose which modules they wish to install, making the instrument highly customizable. Artists can purchase pre-configured modular synths, or build their own systems over time.

Modules are connected to one other with patch cables. How the modules are connected determines how the synthesizer operates. A modular synth is patch programmable.

This open-ended creative method encourages experimentation and happy accidents. Unlike computer-based artmaking, patching a modular synth is a tactile, embodied experience. It's closer to the traditional art forms of painting, filmmaking, and music. Patching and tweaking a modular synth incorporates elements of design, art, and performance in a unique and joyful way.
